Sausalito: Head across the iconic Golden Gate Bridge to the beautiful city of Sausalito, just a 25-minute drive from San Francisco. The picturesque city is set on a hillside, and one of the biggest draws is the attractive harbour area. There are plenty of shops and restaurants for you to explore. Also, make sure you spend time strolling along the waterfront boardwalk where local vendors sell their products.
Point Reyes: Around 30 miles (50km) north of San Francisco, Point Reyes is an idyllic haven that’s a far cry from the hustle and bustle of the city. The rugged shoreline is home to elephant seals, so why not bring a pair of binoculars and see if you can spot one for yourself? There are plenty of scenic walking trails, including one which leads down to an old lighthouse.
Sacramento: The capital of California, the city of Sacramento can be reached in about 90 minutes from San Francisco. Combining a rich history with modern architecture, Sacramento has plenty to offer all ages. Enjoy a walk along the city’s historic waterfront (also a thriving shopping and entertainment district), then head Downtown to the California State Capitol Museum, which showcases California’s past through exhibits and artifacts. If you’re travelling with children, be sure to visit William Land Park — home to Sacramento Zoo and Fairytale Town (where you will find play areas based on nursery rhymes and famous stories).
