Domaine de Lacroix-Laval: This chateau is less than a 30-minute drive from Lyon. Set in a 115-hectare nature reserve with plenty of picnicking spots and walking trails, Domaine de Lacroix-Laval is popular with families and is a great escape from the city. There are elegant formal gardens to enjoy — and the chateau regularly holds cultural events throughout the year.
Grottes Du Cerdon: The Grottes Du Cerdon (or the Caves of Cerdon) lie around an hour’s drive north-east of Lyon. Cut by turbulent water during the Ice Age, these caves are as surreal as they are fascinating. A train takes you to the entrance where you then explore the cave system on foot. Over the millenniums, humans have lived and sought sanctuary in these caves — and traces of their existence can be seen in the cave art that adorns some of the walls.
Sainte-Croix-en-Jarez: Located in the heart of the Parc Naturel Régional du Pilat is the picturesque village of Sainte-Croix-en-Jarez. Originally a monastery, the village grew up around it as time went by — although most of the religious buildings are now houses. The church, kitchen, monk’s cells and cloister are open to the public. Classed as one of France’s most beautiful villages, Sainte-Croix-en-Jarez is not to be missed.
