Lastours Castles: Four castle towers dot the mountainside of Lastours. Situated 25 minutes north-east of Carcassonne, these romantic-looking ruins are original Cathar castles. The fort was used on and off until the French Revolution, when it was finally abandoned for good. You can now walk around the ruins of the castle, the village it protected and the caves that adorn the mountain.
Montpellier: Montpellier is an elegant city located just under two hours north-east of Carcassonne. As the capital of the Languedoc-Roussillon region, Montpellier is full of history and culture. Do you love art? Visit the Musée Fabre, which has a collection of fine European art. Are you a history buff? Then take a stroll through the Old Town and enjoy the medieval alleyways and cloisters.
Rennes-le-Château: Rennes-le-Château is a hilltop village with an important castle situated on the peak of a mountain. The village, located an hour away from Carcassonne, also has a large church, vineyards and a museum detailing the history of the settlement. Once a stronghold for the Visigoths and the Cathars, Rennes-le-Château has attracted treasure hunters and spawned many farfetched conspiracy novels — whatever you think, the village is a fascinating day out.
