Kronborg: A 50-minute drive from Copenhagen is Kronborg, the inspiration for Elsinore in William Shakespeare’s Hamlet. The play was first performed in the castle on the 200th anniversary of the bard’s death, and since then the play is staged regularly — sometimes with an all-star cast. Now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, you can enjoy Kronborg’s grand staterooms and handsome gardens.
Odense: Just under a two-hour drive away from Copenhagen is Odense, the birthplace of fairy-tale author Hans Christian Andersen. The capital of the island of Funen (Fyn), Odense boasts museums, independent shops and a zoo. The Hans Christian Andersen Museum, the fairy tale sculpture trail and the Tinder Box cultural centre for children are not to be missed.
Dragør: Dragør is a picturesque, historic fishing village, just half an hour south-east of Copenhagen. Here you can discover how the people of Denmark used to live, and how their life was governed by the whims of the sea. You can also enjoy some of the scrumptious seafood that the fishermen catch in one of the many restaurants. Need to relax? Then bathe in the sea at the nearby Kastrup Sea Baths.
