Arenal Volcano and Tabacon Hot Springs: Around three hours from San Jose, the Arenal Volcano and the nearby hot springs, warmed by the earth’s geothermal power, are worth the long drive. First visit the lava fields of the Arenal volcano, and then head to the lush rainforest where the Tabacon Hot Springs bubble up from the ground.
Jaco Beach: Jaco Beach is San Jose’s closest beach. An hour-and-40-minute-drive away, this beach resort is a surf spot as well as a relaxing seaside destination. The palm-tree-lined sand can get busy, but nothing like other international beach resorts. Jaco also has an active nightlife with plenty of clubs and bars to keep any party-lover dancing till dawn. Just remember not to drink and drive.
La Paz Waterfall Gardens: Located just over 80 minutes out of San Jose are the lush La Paz Waterfall Gardens — one of the most visited ecological attractions in Costa Rica. The gardens have 3.5 kilometres of walking trails that take in rainforests and dramatic waterfalls. There are also ten wildlife exhibits that include jaguars, frogs, butterflies, spider monkeys and more.
